Rep. Juan Vargas has reintroduced a resolution to honor Indian human rights activist Stanislaus Lourduswamy, a Jesuit priest known for advocating for the Adavasi people’s right to protect their lands and homes from unfair seizure by the state and mining corporations.

Vargas, who represents the 52nd District along the border, was a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee when he first heard about the passing of Lourduswamy, who was known as Father Stan. As a former Jesuit himself, Vargas felt compelled to speak out and urge passage of the resolution.

The resolution honors the life and legacy of Father Stan and reaffirms an ongoing commitment to democracy, religious freedom, and justice around the world.

“Father Stan dedicated his life to giving a voice to the voiceless. He was a tireless advocate for the rights of the indigenous Adivasi people, trained young community leaders, and worked for justice for many communities in India,” said Vargas.

“As a former Jesuit, I’m horrified that Father Stan faced relentless abuse and was denied medical care while in custody. I introduced this resolution to make sure Father Stan and his lifelong commitment to the greater good is never forgotten.”

The resolution follows the two year anniversary of Father Stan’s death while in custody of the Indian state. The resolution urges India to pursue an independent investigation into his arrest, incarceration, and death. The investigation would primarily concern the medical neglect faced by Father Stan as an elderly person with Parkinson’s disease.

The case has garnered international attention due to doctored evidence leading to Father Stan being charged with terrorism along with 15 other prisoners. Prominent groups such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Catholic cardinals and bishops have spoken out against the actions of the Indian authorities.

Aside from the request to investigate Father Stan’s incarceration, the resolution also asks the House of Representatives to make it clear to the Indian government and governments around the world that the mistreatment and incarceration of individuals advocating for human rights cannot continue.

Additionally, the resolution asks Congress to monitor and support the Adivasi, Dalit, and minority communities in India, as well as other indigenous communities around the world.
