    Lightning strikes cause oil releases in Williams, Burleigh counties

    NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Two separate oil releases were reported to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division on July 8.

    According to a news release, one release happened in Williams County, and the other was in Burleigh County. Both took place on July 4.

    The release in Williams County was reported by Henry Hill Oilfield Service at the Westphal 11-32 well location. The report stated that about 500 barrels of produced water were released.

    The release in Burleigh County was reported by Formentera Operations, LLC, at the J. Swenson 22-2 well location. The report said that two barrels of crude oil and 320 barrels of produced water were released.

    In both releases, the cause was a fire from a lightning strike. All the products from each site were contained and cleanup is taking place.

    Inspectors have been out to both locations and will continue to monitor the cleanup.
