MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The County of Monterey started a two-month long construction project Monday on Alisal Road between Sconberg Parkway and Hartnell Road.

This project is expected to be complete by the end of September and will involve reconstructing the road by recycling the existing road base and pavement, according to the County of Monterey.

In a process called Full-depth Recycle/Reclamation (FDR), the existing road will be destroyed, mixed with cement and then compacted/graded where it is currently. The County of Monterey says that once the FDR layer is cured, construction crews can add an asphalt concrete layer, which is expected to last for the next 20 years.

Construction will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Although the county announced that traffic control measures will be in place, they suggest the public use alternate routes when possible.

According to the County of Monterey, Granite Rock Construction from San Jose was awarded the construction contract, and the estimated cost of the project is $3.8 million. This project is funded by Measure X, SB 1, and Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
