LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — A pair of big wildfires first reported on Sunday have Nevada crews busy trying to contain them.

The smaller of the two fires, the North Creek Fire , is at 1,100 acres about 50 miles northeast of Ely near the White Pine-Elko county line. Wind is driving the fire and it’s burning in steep and rugged terrain, according to information provided by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The fire is 10% contained with full containment anticipated on Sunday, July 14, according to an update early Monday night.

The larger fire, now estimated at 16,830 acres, is burning in Humboldt County near the Nevada-Oregon border. It has been named the Wilder Fire . That fire is 40% contained, according to the BLM.

Video from a helicopter flying over the North Creek Fire shows flames burning pinyon-pine, juniper, brush and grass in the area. Drivers are warned to avoid North Spring Valley Road for the next several days as crews continue to battle the fire. The fire was first reported at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, and its cause hasn’t been determined.

Record-breaking temperatures and low humidity have increased fire danger, and the conditions are expected to remain for the next five to seven days.

Crews from BLM’s Elko, Ely and Southern Nevada districts are working with personnel from Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Ely Ranger District, the Nevada Division of Forestry and private contractors.

The Wilder Fire is an eight-hour drive north of Las Vegas in an area below the Oregon border and east of Denio Highway 140. It’s 13 miles southeast of Denio.

Four air tankers, an air attack plane and a helicopter are involved in the fighting the wildfire, along with 14 engines, four water tenders and five dozers. Crews are trying to keep the fire from burning east through the Bilk Creek Mountain Range.

The BLM’s Winnemucca District is leading the firefighting effort.

The fire was first reported Sunday at 11:23 a.m. and the cause is undetermined.

A third fire — Nye County’s Horse Fire — was also first reported on Sunday. That fire, located near Horse Heaven Mountain in the Monitor Range near the Eureka County line, is now at 88 acres, with no available estimate for when it will be contained.
