SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a category 1 hurricane in south Texas early this morning. Beryl will weaken into a Tropical Storm and Tropical Depression as it moves over the ArkLaTex this afternoon through tonight. While we could see a few tropical storm-force wind gusts, the main threats will be flash flooding and quick spin-up tornadoes.

We will have a few scattered showers and storms around this morning as the outer bands move onshore and pass through the ArkLaTex. The inner bands will begin to move into deep east Texas by the early afternoon and there is a chance a few tropical storm-force wind gusts over 40 miles per hour will occur. This may snap a few tree branches and result in scattered power outages.

The highest threats today will be flash flooding and tornadoes. The outer bands of Beryl will produce quick spin-ups for much of the afternoon and evening. These tornadoes occur quickly and without advanced warning. If you don’t have to be outside running errands, or in a car, stay home today. The Storm Prediction Center has honed in on deep east Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas as the areas that will likely see the highest threat of tornadoes today. A level 3 ‘Enhanced Risk’ outlook is forecast for these areas today.

The tropical airmass will result in heavy downpours and flash flooding could develop quickly. The heavy rain will develop by the early afternoon and continue beyond sunset tonight. The heaviest rain will be close to the center of circulation which will be passing through east Texas. A corridor of 3 to 6 inches of rain will be possible. A Flood Watch is in effect through 3 p.m. Tuesday.

We will likely see improving conditions after midnight, but a few trailing bands could result in heavy rain at times on Tuesday morning.

High temperatures will likely be in the 80s for the next 2 days, so the heat advisories and warnings will go away for a few days. As drier air takes over midweek we’ll return to the mid-90s Wednesday through Friday.
