EL DORADO, Kan. (KSNW) — The Butler County Sheriff’s Office wants to make it clear that their department will never call you and tell you to pay money or go to jail.

Undersheriff Damion Cundiff says for the past several weeks, a man has been calling Butler County residents claiming to be a member of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. Last week, he used the name of a retired Lieutenant, and this week, he has started using the name of the department’s patrol captain.

Cundiff says the man uses a spoofer to change his caller ID, which appears as 316-322-4254, the main line of the sheriff’s office. He is reportedly very aggressive on the phone, making threats of arrest if the person doesn’t pay immediately using Bitcoin.

Clearwater police say donation calls are a scam

The sheriff’s office wants to make it clear that they will never call you to collect money for fines, court fees, or any other payment. Last week, an El Dorado resident lost $10,000 to the scammer .

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from a law enforcement agency telling you that you need to pay money to avoid going to jail, hang up. If you are unsure, contact the department yourself through a number you have verified as legitimate.
