BISMARCK, N.D. ( KXNET ) — Monday, New Economic Frontier presented signatures to the North Dakota Secretary of State.

22,444 signatures, out of 15,582 needed signatures, were collected in an initiated measure that hopes to legalize recreational marijuana.

Steve Bakken, the Chairperson for New Economic Frontier, said that they have been verifying signatures as they go, so they expect a low spoilage rate with the signatures collected. The Secretary of State now has 35 days to validate the signatures.

The measure, Bakken said, is worded similar to the medical measure that passed a few years ago. He said that this measure suits the conservative needs of North Dakotans. However, he also said that there is already push back from some legislators. Bakken and New Economic Frontier plan to educate the public about the measure over the next few months before the election.
