Fire crews are battling a wildland and structure fire near Covelo in far northern Mendocino County estimated to be about 50 acres, according to Cal Fire. The fire, named the Mina Fire, is northwest of Covelo and was reported around 2:06 p.m. as a structure fire that had spread to the wildland in the 97500 block of Mina Road. It is currently at zero containment.Both Cal Fire and local agencies are responding, including helicopters and air tankers.  The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office issued an evacuation warning for the surrounding area, zone MEN-1COV01. Residents can visit mendoready.org to find their evacuation zone and current emergency information.

Ortega said she came to Denver from Connecticut and lived in her car for 15 days. She received a three-day hotel voucher, she said, but hotel staff initially would not honor it. She did not name the hotel. She said staff finally looked at her paperwork and gave her a room, but they wanted to charge her. for it She said they initially weren’t going to allow her to stay because she has a service animal.

A 53-year-old man from Douglas was recently arrested after local drug detectives executed a search warrant at an apartment in the Crown Villas complex. According to a preliminary report from the Coffee County Drug Unit, detectives conducted the search on June 27 based on prior cocaine purchases made at the location. Upon entry, detectives found Alyn Franklyn, identified as a black male, in the master bedroom. During the search, one detective discovered a small brown plastic bag/wrapper containing suspected crack cocaine on top of the microwave in the kitchen.
