We were designed by a creative God. He designed from nothing everything we know in this world. The expanse of the universe is set by God. He fills that space with magnificent heavenly bodies and places the details on each like He planted the trees and multiplied thousands of species of living creatures.

Out of nothing, God creates everything.

However, the creation story of Genesis takes a turn when God gets to the human. He doesn’t create humanity out of nothing. Humanity is formed in dust, crafted in the likeness of the Trinity, breathed into by the very Spirit of God and placed into a world of wonders to rule, reign and multiply.

Human beings are from the dirt. Why would He craft us from the dirt?

Dirt, as far I know, is the only source in which things are planted and grow. We are not crafted after the animals, but out of the soil. He’s placed eternity in our hearts and expects it to grow. Our love should grow. Our joy grows.

We should be articulating the redemptive Gospel story around the world because everywhere it is planted and takes root changes everything. You are an eternally budding flowerbed, yet there is more than good seed sown here.

What actually takes root and grows in the soil? What is planted, watered and not dug up. I know you have some disappointment, hurt and heartbreak in your garden. It seems those things grow so much quicker than the good seed.

Anger and resentment can be sown and grow overnight. It is our job to cultivate what we want in our flower bed. The fruit will get choked out if we only leave the wild weeds to soak up the nourishment. Curate the garden of your heart so that joy, love, peace and courage do not get choked out.

Let us also not be like the generations before us who took fruit, plucked it and expected to be able to enjoy it indefinitely. A way of doing things, an idea or concept: the fruit that they took from the divine root and made it an idol.

It may be harmless in the sense of being grateful for what we have seen, until we can no longer enjoy the nutrition given us today because we’re too busy missing the dead and rotting fruit of past gone era.

Let’s recognize with deep love the divine vine that brings life to all creatures in this life. Let us abide in the wonderful, gracious and life-giving vine. May we bloom in season and in perfect union with His will.

What I want you to understand through these pictures is that you are different than all other creatures. You have the ability to imagine and think on things that have never been done before! Genesis 1 and 2 tell us that you are blessed, made in God’s image, designed for community, given authority over all the earth and expected to multiply.

Stay obsessed with the root — Jesus Christ — and not the fruit, stay consistent with uprooting every weed, and celebrate others’ enjoying what God brings to growth in your life.
