A decade has passed since the Tom Cruise-led time-loop alien invasion, Edge of Tomorrow , hit theaters and the film's director, Doug Liman, said in a new interview with Empire Magazine that he and Cruise "keep talking about" an Edge of Tomorrow sequel.
"We love that world," Liman told Empire.
Cruise stars alongside Emily Blunt in the film, which features a soldier fighting aliens, reliving the same day over and over again, which restarts every time he dies.
Liman acknowledged the decade-long gap between now and when his film was released but cited the interval between James Cameron's Terminator films, saying, "I don't know how long Cameron took with his Terminators ...but at the time it felt like a long time."
"Tom and I just actually rewatched [ Edge of Tomorrow ] about two months ago, because I hadn't seen it in 10 years," the director said. "I was like, 'Wow, that is a really good movie.'"
Liman's latest film, The Instigators , will hit select theaters and AppleTV+ on August 2.
The director spoke about his opening weekend history, saying, "I haven't necessarily always had the good fortune of having movies that have huge opening weekends".
"Bourne Identity lost to Scooby-Doo [on] its opening weekend. And Swingers came and went from the theatres. What I've come to understand is, I'm making movies for the long term. I'm an ego-driven guy, I'd like to get accolades now. But I also recognise that, if I was given the choice, I'll choose making films that people 50 years from now are still watching," Liman said.
So perhaps a sequel is on the horizon, which will be fantastic news for Emily Blunt, who called for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel just last year in an interview.
