King Charles's birthday photo was a nightmare because of Princes William and Harry

A few years ago, King Charles marked his 70th birthday with an official family birthday photo.

The photo depicted Charles's immediate family including wife, Queen Camilla, sons, Princes William and Harry, as well as their respective wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

Charles's three grandchildren, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were also present.

However, behind the family portrait, tensions were simmering.

According to royal authors, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, both William and Harry made it difficult for Charles as they made very little effort to get together with their father for the photo. They were not readily available.

The reason had to do with money as this was a source of tension between Charles and his sons.

Charles controlled the purse strings and determined what he would give to his sons and their families.

In their book, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand have this to say about Charles's relationship with his sons,

"The brothers sometimes had to vie for additional funds for projects from their father, who also helped to cover expenses related to Camilla and some of those for his sons (including Kate and Meghan's wardrobes). They actually genuinely have to debate who gets what amount from their father to fund their projects. While Charles may be a father to Harry, he's also their boss, and that makes their relationship complex for a number of reasons."
