ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) – Feedback signs showing motorist’s their speed have been placed along the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) , the feedback signs will warn motorists to slow down when traveling too fast. Speed limit signs have also been posted at 60 miles per hour for all motorists, which is a change from the previous speed limit of 55 for trucks and 60 for cars. Trucks, however, will remain restricted to the right lane only.

The focus is to reduce the number of fatal and injury crashes, which often keep the basin bridge closed to traffic for hours at a time. The intention of the signage and speed limit change is so all vehicles will be moving at a consistent speed in order to reduce speed differential.

DOTD will monitor speed, crash and incident-related data to determine the effectiveness of the speed limit and feedback signs.

Louisiana State Police and local law enforcement will continue to issue citations to violators.
