An Alabama state representative has been arrested by the Alabama Attorney General’s office on felony fraud-related charges.

Kelvin Jamichael Lawrence, 50, a resident of Lowndes County, was charged with forgery in the second degree and with criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, said Attorney General Steve Marshall. The indictment alleges that Lawrence, with the intent to defraud, falsely made, completed or altered a builder’s license.

Both forgery and criminal possession of a forged instrument are Class C felonies punishable by one year and one day to 10 years in prison.

Lawrence could not immediately be reached for comment. The Democrat from Hayneville was first elected to the Legislature in 2014. He represents District 69 which covers parts of Lowndes, Wilcox, Montgomery and Autauga counties.

The case is being prosecuted by the Special Prosecutions Division. No further information about the investigation or about Lawrence’s alleged crimes were immediately released.
