Later sunsets and overcrowded shelters led to the San Diego Humane Society Tuesday expanding hours for pet adoptions on Thursdays and Fridays by two hours — from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The extended hours are planned to be in effect through Oct. 25, and coincide with a special adoption promotion where fees for puppies, kittens, dogs and cats will be $25 through July 31. The shelter remains open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The promotion, sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters, is intended to help the 1,954 animals currently in SDHS care into forever homes.

San Diego Humane Society currently has 343 dogs, 22 puppies, 124 cats and 144 kittens available for adoption at its campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego.

To view pets available for adoption, visit sdhumane.org/adopt. Pets adopted from SDHS have been assessed and cared for, microchipped, spayed/neutered and vaccinated as well as new owners having access to adoption benefits, training advice, an adoption guarantee, pet supplies, educational resources and support for the life of your animal.

The Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions Tuesday through Sunday.
