The Owatonna clay target team ended its season last month at the Minnesota Trap Shooting Championships in Alexandria. The season was the team’s most successful one to date, with Owatonna having a clay target shooting team since 2017.

The team won their first ever conference title, competing in the Minnesota State High School League(MSHSL) Clay Target League’s Class 9A Conference 2. Owatonna lead the conference in standings for the duration of the whole season.

The conference includes the teams of Rosemount, Northfield, Nicollet, Hastings, Bemidji, and New London-Spicer. Owatonna’s total team score for the season was 82,522.50, which was over 10,000 more than the second place team’s score.

Owatonna’s score was higher than their score last year, which was 75,799.50. They finished second in the conference last year.

Senior Mack Mogen, who was one of the team’s captains, finished the season as the team’s highest scoring average shooter, with a 23.4 average. Junior Ethan Schubert and sophomore Tori Koziolek were the team’s second and third highest scorers with 23.2 and 22.8 averages.

Mogen started his clay target high school career in a unique way. Mogen, who is right-handed, is left eye dominant and he was encouraged by then-coach Kyle Wolfe to try shooting left-handed. Mogen did so and continued to shoot left-handed the rest of his high school career.

Mogen was a standout of Owatonna’s clay target team during his career, earning a top 25 athlete in the conference two times and participated in the MSHSL Clay Target state tournament in 2023.

While Owatonna’s regular season ended in May, their season officially ended in June after they competed at the 2024 Minnesota Trap Shooting Championships in Alexandria. The competition had them face off against all the teams in Class 9A.

Owatonna ended up placing seventh at the championship, with Morgan Hansen placing third for the varsity female individual competition with a score of 94-100. Jackson Davis tied for fifth for the varsity male individual competition with a score of 96/100.

After the regular season ended for Owatonna and before they traveled to Alexandria for the state competition, the team handed out team awards at the Owatonna Clay Target Team Banquet on June 3. Mack Mogen was recognized as the highest shooting average male and Tori Koziolek was recognized as the highest shooting average female on the team.
