    Canton Baptist Church began in a small log cabin schoolhouse. It was first organized in 1870 with 13 members. Rev. B.H. Carter served as the first pastor. The next building, shown in today’s picture, was a framed structure. It was built in 1887 about 25 yards west of the first building. An interesting story that took place a year or two later was included in the church history. During the late 1880s there was an unusual August revival. There had been services through Friday night and the meeting was closed. An earthquake occurred, startling and frightening people so much that they decided to extend the revival through the next week. The account further states that “forty were shaken in the church and later, all except two of them fell out.” During the late 1890s the church purchased its first organ. A third building was constructed in 1927. Since that time the church has continued to grow. In 1999, tragedy struck the church when a tornado damaged the sanctuary. It was later rebuilt in 2003. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
