Chaplain Bill Hunt Jr. remembered for 23 years of service in Kittitas County

KITTITAS CO., Wash. -- Kittitas County Sheriff's Office said Chaplain Bill Hunt Jr. has died after serving Kittitas County for 23 years.

According to KCSO, Hunt suddenly died July 5. The cause of death was not released.

KCSO highlighted Hunt's work in the industry and said from the first time he stepped foot into the Kittitas County Jail in 1999 he was called to serve as a chaplain.

And that is exactly what he did. KCSO said only two years later in 2001, Hunt showed dedication to this service and was asked by then-Sheriff Gene Dana to become a certified Chaplain.

Officials said Hunt wanted to enhance his abilities and learn what deputies and suspects went through. Hunt went through the KCSO Reserve Deputies' Academy and was then sworn in as a Commissioned Reserve Deputy in 2003.

KCSO said Hunt served as both a Chaplain and Reserve Deputy for the Sheriff's Office for the next 18 years. The Sheriff's Office said Hunt volunteered thousands of hours to inmates and always responded to deputies calls at every hour of the night or day.

'Bill remained committed to his ministry to inmates after he resigned his Reserve commission in 2021." Sheriff Clay Myers said, "he was a deeply devout Christian, but he was able to sincerely and effectively care for people of different faiths or no faith at all. Bill was an exceptionally giving and loving person and this Sheriff’s Office and community were made immeasurably better by his presence."
