Former feral dogs have some of the best rescue stories out there. They have a lot to overcome; they've literally never known love from a human before. They're a huge undertaking, but one that's totally worth the wait.

One dog mom rescued a feral Pit Bull mix, and she was pregnant. Obviously, they were expecting some kind of Pit mix, short-coated and on the smaller side, but on Sunday, July 7th, her new mom posted to let us know that that was not at all what she got:

When tiny, short-haired, brown Hazel gave birth to a giant, fluffy, black puppy, we were stumped. None of the other dogs in the feral pack were black or fluffy. We met Bruce’s dad, an abandoned dog named Bear some neighbors down the road took in, when Bruce was 8 months old and the two could’ve been twins. Bruce looks nothing like his mama and always turns heads #rescuedog #rescuepuppy #dogmom #pitmix #fluffypitmix #apbtmix #fluffyapbtmix #mutt #fluffydog

I can only imagine the surprise @thekittyandmarley felt when Hazel popped this guy out. I'm glad they've since found out who the father is!

Hazel was rescued last year. She was living with a pack of feral dogs in the neighborhood, and she'd managed to get pregnant - obviously, as a feral dog , she wasn't spayed. Judging by the other feral dogs in the pack, her new mom thought she had a good ideas of what the puppy would look like, but as it turns out... she was wrong.

Hazel's baby, Bruce, came out black, fluffy, and huge - something no one expected. He looked nothing like any of the male dogs in the pack, and come to find out, his dad is a sweet dog named Bear who their neighbors took in after he was abandoned by previous owners. In a follow-up video, Bruce's mom confirmed that he is:

    1. 31.1% American Pit Bull Terrier
    2. 18.6% Chow Chow
    3. 16.4% Supermutt (likely Australian Cattle Dog, Border Collie, and Australian Shepherd)
    4. 14.4% Basset Hound
    5. 9.4% Boxer
    6. 5.9% American Staffordshire Terrier
    7. 4.2% German Shepherd

Everyone swore he was part Newfoundland, Golden Retriever, or even Great Pyrenees, but no! He's much more than that - and gorgeous!

Doggy DNA Tests Have Become a Great Tool

They're fairly new, rising to popularity around the same time that DNA testing yourself did. However, just like at home human DNA tests, these kits have seriously become an essential when it comes to rescues and just having a dog in general. Some landlords require them before you can move in because of breed restrictions!

It can be intimidating to go into a rescue and just pick out a dog whose breed is unknown; you're going in blind about their temperament, their genetics, etc. Before DNA testing, shelters would take their best guesses (and many still do), but now, DNA kits make it possible for you to know what you're getting. However, there may be some inaccuracy under certain circumstances.

Before buying a dog from a breeder, it's also possible to ask to see DNA results - any reputable breeder will have them on-hand for the parents. It's not just breeds they unlock; they can tell you if the dog has certain gene mutations! I'm glad she did one for Bruce - not knowing would've killed me!
