WICHITA COUNTY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — After being nominated for a big-time honor, Wichita County Commissioners were awarded for the county’s dedication to the arts.

At their meeting on Tuesday, July 9, commissioners were presented with the “Lasting Community Impact Through Arts Advocacy Award” by Arts Alliance Executive Director Ann Arnold-Ogden.

Wichita County was nominated for the award by the Arts Alliance for supporting the Legends Project, which honors Wichita County native Charlye Farris. Farris is known for becoming the first African American woman to receive her license to practice law in the state of Texas.

The award was presented during the Texas Arts Advocacy Awards dinner in Waco last month.

Commissioner Mark Beauchamp and former Wichita County Judge Woody Gossom attended the awards dinner with Arnold-Ogden. All said this is a big win for the county.

“Really to have local officials that understand how art can tell that story, how art can be the catalyst for so many different things in government, in communities, in our daily lives,” Arnold-Ogden said. “It’s an honor to work with Wichita County on this project.”

The sculpture honoring Farris as part of the Legends Project is set to be completed and installed outside the Wichita County Courthouse by fall 2024.
