Gov. Jeff Landry signed an emergency declaration Tuesday for damage attributed to Tropical Storm Beryl. It’s an essential step to place the state in line for any federal disaster recovery assistance made available.

Beryl, which struck the Texas coast Monday morning as a Category 1 hurricane, brought extreme weather to northwestern Louisiana later in the day. Officials reported one death, major damage to homes and businesses and significant power outages.

“This State of Emergency will allow parishes affected by Beryl to utilize state resources as we begin the recovery process,” Landry said in a statement. “We continue to remain in contact with our first responders and local officials and will assist them in every step of the way.”

Beryl is being blamed for nine deaths in Texas, where more than 2.1 million customers were still without power early Tuesday afternoon, Texas Tribune reported. Officials are concerned extreme heat will pose a greater risk for those in areas where electricity isn’t expected to be restored for another week.
