Nervous Singer Stuns “AGT” Judges With “Retro” Vocals: “You’re Creating Something That Doesn’t Exist”

A young singer named Alex Sampson surprised the AGT judges with his uniquely “retro” singing and songwriting talents.
The 20-year-old contestant flew from Ontario, Canada, to try and earn a spot on the L.A.-based series with his original song Pretty Baby . When he first stepped onto the stage, his nerves were extremely obvious to Heidi Klum, Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and Sofía Vergara. They offered some reassurance but questioned whether he’d manage to give his best audition. To their surprise, Alex jumped into the lyrics with ease and confidence.
Alex’s song was reminiscent of 1950s hits—something Simon said he’d expect to hear in “a Martin Scorsese movie.” Howie mentioned that he was initially caught off guard because Alex sounded like Tony Young from Herman’s Hermits.
“I could hear how nervous you were,” said Heidi. “It made you more real in a way. We can hear that you can sing, so it doesn’t bother me. I also love the vibe, and I’m here for it.”
Simon Cowell Praises Alex Sampson For His “Smart” “AGT” Audition
The four judges unanimously agreed that Alex Sampson’s old-school style was something the music industry could use, and Simon asked that he truly lean into the genre.
“For me, this song could have been written in the ’50s or the ’60s, which I thought was really smart, actually, said Simon.”… It was very authentic. It was very different. If this is the lane you want to go down, I think it’s very smart because you separate yourself from what everybody else is doing. So I really, really, really like this audition.”
All four judges voted the singer into the live AGT rounds where he will have a chance to win the $1 million grand prize.
