For the first time, a sea lion is born at Point Defiance Zoo. See video of the little pup

A sea lion pup was born at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, becoming the first to be born at the 119-year-old zoo.

The pup, born June 6, weighed 17 pounds and is exploring her enclosure near her parents, Eloise and Boomer.

The pup received a neonatal exam and a course of antibiotics for a mild respiratory infection, but is doing well. The zookeepers vigilantly monitor the pup, using a 24/7 camera to monitor her progress.

The pup will continue bonding with Eloise in the coming weeks before being in the pool alongside other sea lions and seals.

The new pup will be behind the scenes at the zoo’s Rocky Shores area. But you can see video of the pup now in the video above.

The pup has yet to be named, though the zoo says four names — Rosa, Marnie, Nori and Pepper — are being considered as part of a naming contest, which closed on July 7.
