Alabama city prepares to host the world at championship Domino tournament

The eyes of Dominoes competitors across the globe are on Alabama this weekend.

The Andalusia Rotary Club is set to host the 48th World Championship Domino Tournament on Friday and Saturday, July 12-13. Domino enthusiasts from across the United States will converge in Andalusia, aiming to dethrone the current champions. Norman Turner of Ozark holds the singles title, while Lyndon Livingston of Kinder, LA, and Rickey Rambo of Kansas City, MO, are the reigning doubles champions.

This year’s tournament boasts significant cash prizes, with the singles champion set to receive $5,000 and the doubles champions earning $2,500 each. Overall, more than $20,000 in cash prizes will be awarded.

In addition to the tournament, the club will host a Fantastic Domino Sweepstakes and steak dinner on Friday night, offering a $15,000 prize. Sweepstakes tickets are priced at $100, which includes a chance at the prize money and two dinners. This year’s dinner will be catered by Benji and Amy Mikel, owners of Tabby D’s.

Early registration for the tournament is $100 per player for adult singles or doubles, with a $10 fee for late registration. The club also organizes tournaments for teens and children. Participants can register online and review the tournament rules at worldchampionshipdomino.com.

Ivy Rogers, the 2024 Miss World Championship Domino Queen, will grace this week’s tournament. Ivy will be present for drawings and award presentations, adding a touch of royalty to the event.

The Andalusia Rotary Club, which sponsors the World Championship Domino Tournament (WCDT), initially held a pageant alongside the event. However, in recent years, the Rotary Club has partnered with the Distinguished Young Woman of Covington County program to appoint the Domino Queen.

The event will take place at the Kiwanis Community Center, located at 20096 S. Bypass, Andalusia.
