BARBOURSVILLE, WV (WOWK) – Students in Cabell County are learning how to become inventors.

Camp Invention is taking place at Village of Barboursville Elementary School and Explorer Academy this week. The week-long STEM camp focuses on creativity, collaboration and invention.

“Our goal in Cabell County Schools is to make sure that students aren’t just engaged during the school year, but all year round.” said Village of Barboursville Elementary School Assistant Principal Matt Hicks. “We’re trying to offer programming and initiatives that really help to keep students engaged and keep their brains active. And so, that really has been the goal the last few weeks, is making sure that when students come here or at Explorer Academy – where our other location is – that they are excited to come to school, they’re excited to learn, and they’re engaged.”

The children in the camp cycled through multiple activities where they could build their own games, model houses and grey water systems. The activities are problem-solving invention challenges where the students use common, everyday items to create new inventions of their own design.

Camp Invention is a summer program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
