Watch the Golden Buzzer-Earning Performance by This 14-Year-Old Singer on 'AGT'

There were a lot of surprises on Tuesday night’s America’s Got Talent auditions, including some horrible performances, but there were also a few stellar ones, including 14-year-old Reid Wilson , a singer from Alabama, who earned a Golden Buzzer and with it, a pass straight through to the live shows.
The young artist was terribly nervous when he took the stage, but he managed to tell judges Simon Cowell , Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara that he has been singing all his life “but the past year, I have been working on it more and singing in front of people more and pursuing it because it is definitely my dream.”
Then he added, “I am definitely nervous, but I am going to put my all into this and sing my heart out and try not to miss a note.”
Simon gave Reid his two minutes to try to make his dream come true on the AGT stage. Reid’s song choice was unusual for a 14-year-old. He chose Lesley Gore ’s 1963 hit “You Don’t Own Me,” and when Simon commented that his parents must have good musical taste, Reid said, “no,” getting a laugh from the judges and the audience.
Reid’s vocals turned out to be impressive, causing Simon to comment, “We weren’t expecting that.”
Then it was time for the critiques.
Heidi said, “I think you’re absolutely incredible. I loved when you took the mic off [the stand] and gave a little more stage presence. Well done.”
And Sofia chimed in, “You were so nervous at the beginning. I was, ‘He’s not going to be able to put his stuff together,’ but you did, and you did amazingly. It sounded spectacular from here.”
Then Simon explained that he shut his eyes for a moment just to listen to Reid’s voice and then, “I opened them again and there’s a sweet, young kid.”
But it was Howie who was the most affected by Reid's performance.
“I was bowled over because I was surprised,” admitted Howie. “I got surprised first of all because you’re a 14-year-old kid from Alabama, so I put myself in your position. You were very nervous, and you came off incredibly nervous. That was a surprise. You know what? That stage is where dreams come true. Do you believe in dreams? [Reid said, ‘yes’]. Well, one of them is about to come true.”
Howie hit the Golden Buzzer, using his second and final one for the season, and sending Reid directly to the live shows.
Reid’s mom came out on stage for a hug as the confetti rained down, while Howie went up on stage and told Reid, “Congratulations, buddy, you are amazing.”
Host Terry Crews asked, “How do you feel?”
Reid managed to say, “I am so star struck. Thank all of you guys, especially Howie.”
Howie walked backstage with Reid and his mom and added, “I did it because of the sound and who you are was nothing close to anything I was expecting. You are a big talent.”
Reid, who shared that Aretha Franklin is his favorite artist, is hoping one day to become a big name in music like she is.
“When I was little, I would just run around the house screaming at the top of my lungs,” he said. “I was not good at all. I just started teaching myself from there. I am a middle child. The stereotypes of being forgotten a little bit are true, but now I will not be forgotten. I am on TV. I would love to be the next superstar. I sing at family gatherings every now and then but nothing big.”
America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
