    Virginia sales tax holiday returning in August

    RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia’s three-day sales tax holiday is returning this August, just in time for the parents of students across the state to be sent a long list of school supplies for the fall.

    According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, this year’s sales tax holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 and end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4. The following items will be exempt from sales tax during the holiday:

    • School supplies, clothing, and footwear
      • Qualified school supplies – $20 or less per item
      • Qualified clothing and footwear – $100 or less per item
    • Hurricane and emergency preparedness products
      • Portable generators – $1,000 or less per item
      • Gas-powered chainsaws – $350 or less per item
      • Chainsaw accessories – $60 or less per item
      • Other specified hurricane preparedness items – $60 or less per item
    • Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products
      • Qualifying Energy Star™ or WaterSense™ products purchased for noncommercial home or personal use – $2,500 or less per item

    More information about what school supplies, clothing and appliances qualify for the sales tax holiday can be found on the department’s website .

    The August sales tax holiday was not included in Virginia’s state budget for 2023 , but legislators were able to move it to October of that year . In 2024, the House of Delegates unanimously passed a bill to bring back the sales tax holiday .
