Nearly 90 DMV fees became more costly this month as the state adjusted its fee rate for this year.

North Carolina requires the DMV to reassess and adjust the cost of its fees every four years. The new costs took effect on July 1, and include a 19% increase for some of the department’s most notable fees.

The cost of a five-year license increased by $5 to $32.50. The cost of an eight-year license jumped by $8 to $52.

The fee hike also applies to items such as commercial driver licenses, copies of driving records, motorcycle registration fees, for hire vehicle registration, house trailers, low-speed vehicles and electric vehicle fees

Kelse Edwards, the state DMV’s Communication Officer, confirmed that customers will also notice an additional processing fee when using a credit or debit card at the DMV checkout kiosk.
