FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A man has been arrested after reaching speeds of over 160 mph in Fresno County and endangering other residents’ lives, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say on June 22 at night, the driver of a 2020 Chevy Camaro LS1 flew passed a deputy near Highway 180 and McCall Avenue. Before the deputy could even attempt to make a traffic stop, the driver was nearly out of sight.

Sheriff’s officials say the deputy called for the Air Support Unit to assist. The California Highway Patrol – Fresno aircraft, AIR 43, arrived in the area and spotted the speeding car.

The sheriff’s office says AIR 43 stuck with the car for six minutes, where it traveled 12 miles, reaching a top speed of 165 mph. The driver ran red lights and made extremely dangerous passing maneuvers. As he blew the intersection of Church and Cedar Avenues in Calwa, he just missed hitting three vehicles and then lost control and crashed.

The driver, identified by deputies as 20-year-old Aaron Campos of Fresno, was able to get out of the car on his own and walk away. He was immediately met by a sheriff’s deputy who took him into custody.

Sheriff’s officials say he was also taken to the hospital for complaints of pain and was arrested under suspicion of reckless driving and evading police.
