When Your Partner Spots The Wave Of The Day, You Best Have A Go

Spotters are a crucial part of the Nazaré experience. Perched on the towering cliff, they have a clear vantage of where peaks will break compared to the water-level surfers and drivers. Not only do they use the radio to identify the biggest waves, they can tell jet skis where to go in the whitewashed maelstrom when a surfer falls. In the case of Brazilian big-wave surfer Vitor Faria, his spotter is crucial in a different way. His wife, Laura Chichurro, is his eyes in the sky.

It was Chichurro who identified this bomb her husband rode in the 2024 Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge. After being towed in by his partner Rodrigo Koxa, Faria smoothly navigated one of the biggest waves of the contest, cementing his entry into the 2024 SURFER Big Wave Challenge .

Faria and Koxa, who go by the team name “Go Bigger” finished third overall in the Nazaré challenge.
