Washington Bridge legal team gives update

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The deadline to bid on the construction of the westbound side of the Washington Bridge has come and gone and the state received not a single bid .

Gov. Dan McKee addressed the issue Tuesday, saying he doesn’t know when it might be finished or how much it may cost to build. He added that his administration plans to reach out to construction companies to ask why none of them bid on the project.

The governor’s legal team of private attorneys , led by Max Wistow and Jonathan Savage, held their own news conference to discuss the state’s litigation strategy.

McKee won’t be there because he is heading to Salt Lake City to attend the summer meeting of the National Governors Association.

During Tuesday’s press conference, McKee deflected questions about whether his administration is holding anyone accountable for the sudden bridge closure seven months ago. It has resulted in traffic jams, financial hardship for local businesses and headaches for state and local leaders.

Target 12 pressed McKee if he knows where the legal team stands, but he remained tight-lipped.

“I’m going to defer to them and allow them to do their job, which is why I brought them on, to hold anybody accountable,” McKee said. “I have to defer to them.”
