United States-based battery component manufacturing firm Ateios Systems has announced the creation of RaiCore High-Voltage Lithium Cobalt Oxide (HV LCO) electrodes.

The electrodes will enable the creation of world’s first perfluoroalkoxy-free (PFA), rechargeable LCO battery, according to Ateios Systems.

The company says that the functional battery prototypes it developed using the trademark RaiCore demonstrated 15-20% more energy density over standard LCOs.

Moreover, the process is free from PFAs or forever chemicals and the company claims that it will have competitive pricing with other cobalt-based electrodes.

    Ateios’ HV LCO electrodes

Ateios works with several partners for their entire battery development cycle from inception to production to produce large-scale, high-quality battery components.

According to the company, the credit for the innovation goes to its RaiCure technology that uses a “chemistry-agnostic manufacturing process that utilizes energy-curable, PFA-free polymers to replace traditional thermal-curable polymers.”

The electrodes produced from the platform process are high-energy density, and high quality. Further, the platform process can also lower the manufacturing cost, and ensure that the batteries are compliant with the strict environmental guidelines.

A major portion of the lithium-ion battery market today caters to consumer durables and other electronic products such as smartphones, wearable, power tools, drones, and more.

The PFA-free and rechargeable Lithium Cobalt Oxide electrodes can cater to this segment as well and provide a new eco-friendly option in the battery market.

Moreover, the battery prototypes developed by Ateios showed over 80% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1C and 100% depth of discharge, according to a press release by the company.

“RaiCore offers the battery industry and its allied sectors a transformative, scalable solution addressing critical challenges in performance, supply chain, and regulatory compliance,” said Rajan Kumar, CEO and Founder of Ateios Systems.

Uses of the RaiCore electrode and battery testing

The company has tied up with various device developers for real-life performance evaluation and to showcase its integration into solutions that can be scaled.

One such partnership that Ateios has entered into is with Softmatter – a softgoods technology company.

Under the partnership, Softmatter will integrate RaiCore into various form factors such as wristables, and augmented reality (AR)/ virtual reality (VR) devices.

“Power has long been the main hindrance to our efforts to create products that optimize the user experience. We see RaiCore-enabled batteries as the first step in creating a portfolio of next-to-skin solutions that enable our consumers to experience conformal power systems,” said Ulysses Wong, Softmatter CEO.

Alteios is also offering sample packs to device developers and battery assemblers around the globe for integration of the RaiCore electrodes into their existing battery products and various form factors.
