If you had grandparents who grew up during the Great Depression, you probably picked up some money-saving pointers for buying groceries. This generation was skilled at finding good deals and making the most of everything. With the cost of food continually rising, these old tricks are becoming popular once again.

In this video from July 2, you’ll discover a straightforward yet powerful tip from a wise grandmother. This uncomplicated hack can help keep more money in your wallet, and your savings can add up fast!

As anyone who does the grocery shopping knows, the price of everything continues to rise. For many of us, our bills have doubled, if not tripled, in the last few years. So, unless your salary has also increased exponentially, you’re probably looking for ways to stretch your grocery budget . Thankfully, there is a lot we can learn from grandmothers (@ jewishgrandmapodcast ) about saving a few dollars!

Grandma’s Advice For Saving Money on Bread

Even though she may get a lot of flack for sharing this, I appreciate her advice. She reports that bread like Challah has become expensive, especially at the bakery. While she admits that making it home may be the most affordable way, it’s not an option for everyone. Whether you have arthritis or lack the time, it’s a complex process. But there’s still a way to score a deal. Instead of paying six or seven dollars for Challah on Thursday, she goes to the bakery on Sunday when it’s half-price. Then she takes it home and puts it in the freezer until she is ready to eat it. She assures us that once we warm it up, “You’ll never know the difference. You would think I baked it an hour before.” She reports that she recently saw a man buying a dozen or more half-price loaves, and when she inquired why he was purchasing so many, he revealed he also freezes them to save money. It may be an old-fashioned idea, but it’s as valuable now as ever!

This trick can also work when buying meat at the grocery store. Many stores have a day each week when they mark down their prices on cuts about to expire. I’ve found family packs of chicken and steaks marked half-price, which can be huge savings. You can even use them as an affordable lunch meat for sandwiches. If you’re unsure when your store marks these items, just ask. It’s a great way to save some serious cash.

Hopefully, besides using these money-saving hacks, the price of food will soon decline. It would be nice to have our food budget be less than our mortgage or rent again.
