The Lake fire burning in California’s Santa Barbara County officially became the largest fire of the year after it topped 20,000 acres on Monday, July 8, officials said, threatening hundreds of structures and injuring three firefighters.

As of Tuesday evening, the fire was an estimated 26,986 acres in size and was threatening 500 structures, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

Satellite images show the active fire, which by Tuesday evening was 16 percent contained, officials said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of July 9, according to Cal Fire.
