Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas recently revealed who are the very best fighters he worked with when it came to specific skill sets, and surprisingly in terms of the best all-around talents he ever trained, Mike Tyson did not get the top spot.

Teddy Atlas is a beloved figure in the boxing game. He is a highly respected trainer who has helped lead several fighters to the ultimate goal of being a world champion. However, he is also an advocate of the sport who is honest in his assessments of pugilists in his various work as an analyst.

That is why he was a perfect participant for Ring Magazine’s popular best-of column that has trainers and fighters chronicle the best they have ever seen or faced in the sport. When it comes to Atlas the outlet inquired about everything from the best chin, punch, footwork, and smarts of the various athletes he has trained.

During his impressive career, Teddy Atlas has worked with boxing greats like Mike Tyson, Barry McGuigan, Shannon Briggs, Michael Moorer, and Tim Bradley. However, when it comes to the “best overall” fighter he has ever trained, the New York native did not pick heavyweight greats Tyson or Moorer.

“Sometimes you go to the Academy Awards and one movie wins all the awards. What are you gonna do? That would be [Wilfred] Benitez,” Atlas said. “Anyone who could beat Roberto Duran, amongst many other great fighters, that’s a pretty good resume. I would say Benitez overall was the package. He was a special fighter.”

It must be noted that he only worked with Tyson in the very early stages of his career when he was a teenager. But he still did list the heavyweight icon as the best puncher — no shocker there — and the fighter with the best chin that he ever encountered.

Wilfred Benitez went 53-8-1 during his career and scored victories over stars of his era like the aforementioned Duran, Pete Ranzany, and Carlos Santos.
