The Emotional Spectrum is one of the greatest concepts in modern comics. First introduced in 2005, it redefined the DC Universe and the Green Lantern Corps . Nine color-based energies were acknowledged, including the Black light of Death and White light of Life. However, Green Lantern #13 seems to introduce a tenth power to the Emotional Spectrum.

Written by Jeremy Adams , with art by Fernando Pasarin , Green Lantern #13 contains several short stories. Most of them are connected to the Absolute Power event, showcasing the side effects of Amanda Waller ‘s war on superheroes. However, one story centers upon the unlikely character of Nathan Allen Broome.

Nathan Broome was introduced as the new fiancée of Carol Ferris, the ex-girlfriend of Hal Jordan , in Green Lantern #2. Reliable, safe, and somewhat boring, Nathan was everything that Hal was not. Nevertheless, Carol seemed to carry a torch for her old flame, even as she ignored Hal’s efforts to win her back.

However, Carol’s true feelings were explicitly confirmed during an impromptu wedding in Las Vegas . The ceremony was interrupted when Carol’s love for Hal summoned a love-powered Star Sapphire ring. Carol abandoned Nathan to rescue the true love of her life, whom she sensed was in danger.

New Green Lantern villain taps the power of sorrow

Green Lantern #13 finds Nathan Broome in the honeymoon suite he had booked, staring at what was meant to be his wedding ring. Broome ponders how he always lost what he wanted to “rule breakers” like Hal Jordan, despite working hard and doing what was expected of him. In the midst of this, a grey smoke begins to pour from the ring. When it clears, Nathan Broome is wearing the ring and clad in a grey costume.

The emblem on Nathan’s costume comparatively resembles the logos symbolizing the other wielders of the Emotional Spectrum. It appears to combine the shape of a teardrop and a downward spiral. This suggests that Nathan’s depression has allowed him to draw upon a new emotional energy; the power of pure sorrow.

Green Lantern #13 is now available at comic shops everywhere .
