A Baywatch docuseries is headed to Hulu. After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun , a four-episode docuseries that takes an inside look at Baywatch , “the cultural phenomenon that defined an era”, from ABC News Studios, will premiere Wednesday, August 28 on the platform.

After Baywatch will feature new cast interviews as well as a never-aired interview with Pamela Anderson, who starred as CJ Parker, and home videos shot by the cast themselves.

The “docuseries unpacks how the show captured the mythology of California’s beach culture, set physical beauty standards for an entire generation, and capitalized on the adage “sex sells,” according to the press release. The series also explores the show’s impact on pop culture and its enduring legacy.

Produced and directed by Matthew Felker in collaboration with ABC News Studios, the series features exclusive interviews with over 35 cast members and the show’s creators, including Nicole Eggert, Carmen Electra, Billy Warlock, Alexandra Paul, Gregory Alan Williams, David Chokachi, Jeremy Jackson, Traci Bingham, Erika Eleniak, Michael Newman, Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and more.

Some of the cast — including Eggert, Electra, Warlock, Jackson, Bingham and Eleniak — gathered for a special panel at Disney’s Television Critics Association event Wednesday to discuss the upcoming documentary and reflect on Baywatch .

“I’ve definitely had a love-hate relationship with the show over the years, but it’s been an evolution, and I definitely love it and appreciate it and I’m proud of it,” Eggert, who is also a producer, said. “I just wanted everybody to see the people for who we all really are. I see a lot of articles where, I’ll use myself for an example, of me at 19 in my red swimsuit, and then me at 52 at the market, and it’s like ‘What happened to her?’ So I’m like, well, let’s talk about what happened. Everybody has a great story, and everybody’s the great humans that I worked with, and there’s so much more to them than just their beauty and their their time on Baywatch .”

When asked why Baywatch remains so relevant, even more than 30 years after it premiered, Felker posited that it’s because the show “sells a fantasy.”

“The 90s and the late 80s were a generation where we didn’t expect as much from TV, and we expect a lot from our stories now. I don’t think you expected much from Baywatch ,” he added, explaining that the series presented viewers with a visual aesthetic that has since become more commonly found on social media, eliminating the necessity for that type of escapism on television.

“It was selling California. It was selling the California Dream and selling a lifestyle,” he continued. “Was an accurate lifestyle? Not really. Because when you come to California, you realize the beaches aren’t really that nice and the people don’t look like that.”

After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun was produced by ABC News Studios for Hulu. Matthew Felker is director and executive producer, Nicole Eggert is a producer, and Ari Shofet is executive producer on the series. For ABC News Studios, David Sloan is the senior executive producer, and Muriel Pearson is executive producer.

Felker is repped by Daniel Benge at Fox Rothschild.
