(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo officially kicked off Tuesday, July 10, with contestants participating in bull riding, roping, barrel racing, and more at the Norris-Penrose Event Center.

Over 200 of the most talented contestants in the business, along with a variety of other traditional Western events, come together to make the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo one of the most exciting events of the year. Six competitions will take place over five days, culminating with semifinals and finals on Saturday, July 13, when the national circuit champions will be crowned.

The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo has been a tradition in Colorado Springs since 1937 when Spencer Penrose founded the rodeo. A year later, he presented the 10,000-seat stadium.

The event is a National Finals Rodeo (NFR) Open, meaning some cowgirls and cowboys are trying to qualify for the national title event in Las Vegas. A deal was struck this year to keep the NFR Open at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo for the next seven years. Organizers say the deal will bring more than six million dollars to the local economy this summer.
