    Southern Tier agencies see closures due to severe weather

    SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. ( WETM ) – Due to the severe weather heading towards the Southern Tier this evening, Southern Tier governing agencies are closing doors to public facilities and events early this afternoon.

    Officials from both Chemung and Schuyler counties have announced that certain public facilities and events will be closed and postponed due to forecasted high winds and thunderstorms this afternoon.

    According to a release from Chemung County Executive Chris Moss, Park Station and the Harris Hill swimming pool will close at 3 p.m. Any questions about the closure should be directed to the Chemung County Buildings & Grounds Department at 607-737-2833.

    In addition, County Executive Moss also announced that the Chemung County Sewer District Open House that was scheduled for 6 p.m. this evening has been postponed. The open house has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 17, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 600 Milton Street in Elmira. Any questions about the open house should be directed to the Chemung County Sewer District at 607-737-2887.

    The Schuyler County Clerk of the Legislator announced in a release that the Schuyler County offices will close at 2 p.m. today due to the impending weather.

    Chemung and Schuyler are the only counties to release closure updates due to the weather at this time. This story will be updated if more closures are put into place for the remainder of the day.

    All residents are reminded to seek shelter and avoid exposure during incidents of severe weather, as well as secure any items that may blow around during a storm to prevent injury and damage. Having a plan for severe weather, as well as avoiding unnecessary travel, is also important.
