Fire crews continue to work toward containment of the Mina Fire, a wildfire near Covelo in Mendocino County that has been burning since Monday afternoon.

On Wednesday morning, Cal Fire reported that the fire is 98 acres in size, an increase from Tuesday night's estimated 50 acres. The increase is due to better mapping of the burn area. Additionally, the fire is 50 percent contained.

The fire was first reported at 2:06 p.m. Monday in the 97500 block of Mina Road in a far northeastern part of the county.

Wednesday, fire crews will work toward further containment and mopping up areas along the fire perimeter. Mopping up is defined as "the hard physical labor process of extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines down to the mineral soil, felling fire damaged trees, and cooling ash pits to make a fireline less likely to escape or to reduce residual smoke," according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Cal Fire and local agencies are responding, as well as the California National Guard, California Conservation Corps, and Mendocino National Forest officials. Cal Fire says 250 personnel are responding to the fire.

Evacuation warnings remain in place for the immediate surrounding area in zone MEN-1COV01. Residents can visit mendoready.org to find their evacuation zone and current emergency information.
