It is human nature to do for others. Being part of a community means we help one another. But when we help others more than we help ourselves, we may end up not being able to help anyone at all.

Self-care has come more into focus over the past decade, as we shine a light on mental and emotional wellness and what that means. With societal pressures and modern technology keeping us tapped into everything everyone does, life can seem overwhelming. Part of self-care is allowing yourself the time and space to disconnect and just “be.”

I remember when I first started doing yoga many years ago. I was so stressed that I couldn’t even bear to relax and focus on my body for an hour. It was near torture to try and calm my mind. But I stuck with it, and, to this day, I do yoga nearly every morning. It helps with blood flow and sets my mind for the day.

Self-care can take many forms. It is about treating yourself to something that nourishes your mind, body and/or soul. That may be a hot bath, a walk in nature, reading a good book, making your favorite dish, getting your hair done, talking with your bestie, or just taking a much-needed break. It can be five minutes or five hours. It’s up to you.

Being a board-certified health coach, making sure I am getting the proper nutrition is important to me. One way I achieve this is by choosing healthy foods to eat. I also take a variety of oral supplements to help fill any gaps. To top this off, I get at least one nutritional IV drip every month and a B12 shot weekly to help with my energy level.

Find what self-care fills your cup — it may be many things. Whatever you choose to do, practice regularly. Doing so can help reduce stress and increase longevity.
