Post Malone & Blake Shelton’s “Pour Me A Drink” Sounds Scary Similar To Halle Kearns’ “Homemade Margaritas”

Scary similar. Like, almost identical? In today's world, there are often lawsuits over artists recording a riff or a melody, or perhaps even writing a song that sounds exactly like another one. Maybe they're not aware that they have heard it before and it lives deep in the subconscious, maybe they haven't heard it before and it's just a coincidence (which happens, there's only so many notes and chord progressions) or maybe there is something more malicious at play. I suspect that more times than not, especially in mainstream country music, these instances are just representative of the formulaic, derivative nature of the genre right now, and not downright thievery. However, when similar melodies or lyrics go without the credit (and more importantly money), it can lead to litigation. Sometimes it doesn't because, let's be honest, who really wants to go through all that on something as ambiguous and nuanced as music. We saw Kane Brown get a credit on Florida Georgia Line's
"I Love My Country" a few years back because they essentially had the same melody and chord progression as his "Short Skirt Weather," and more recently, we saw it with Beyoncé's "Texas Hold 'Em" sounding eerily like the Franklin theme song. https://twitter.com/WebrMarketing/status/1758891642231173226?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1758891642231173226%7Ctwgr%5E390596a4228b309be4e033979a9d66f2db1e1272%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whiskeyriff.com%2F2024%2F02%2F21%2Fbeyonces-texas-hold-em-sounds-eerily-similar-to-the-franklin-theme-song-now-i-cant-unhear-it%2F And now Post Malone and Blake Shelton find themselves in a similar situation, but rather than taking something from a 1997 Canadian kid's show, it's an up-and-coming artist out of Nashville, also in the country music scene. Halle Kearns released her single "Homemade Margaritas" in March this year, and it's a cheeky single about making a drink that helps you itch that tropical need. What better way to escape the city or country than making a homemade margarita and channeling your inner Jimmy Buffett? While the lyrical content revolves around catching a buzz, the songs become even more similar when you play the melodies side by side. The intro to
"Pour Me A Drink" sounds nearly identical. I mean, they are scary similar. https://www.instagram.com/p/C8rx956OcrR/ And just for sh*ts and giggles, here is a side-by-side of her pushing play on both songs from Spotify simultaneously.

It sounds nearly note for note the same, and honestly, now I won't be able to unhear it. Granted, the intro is really where the similarities start and end, but nevertheless, pretty wild to hear them side by side. In the meantime, while you're here, fire up Halle Kearn's track. It will put you in the perfect summertime mood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLfpKN-6IDI
