NYPD officer dies after medical episode in the Bronx: Police

RODMAN’S NECK, Bronx (PIX11) – An NYPD officer died after having a medical episode at a department training facility in the Bronx Wednesday, according to the NYPD.

The 33-year-old recruit, identified by officials as probationary police officer Edgar Ordonez, suffered a medical episode around 11:25 a.m. while doing a training exercise at an outdoor range at Rodman’s Neck, according to the NYPD.

He was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition and died shortly after, officials said. Ordonez started with the department in January, according to police.

“Edgar Ordonez was a beacon of joy and positive energy for his fellow recruits. He had the drive and determination necessary to become a New York City police officer, and he was just days away from hitting the streets and making a difference in protecting our city,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry.

Ordonez was set to graduate on Monday, officials said. The NYPD posted a video to X showing police recruits and officers lining the streets in New York City in a tribute to Ordonez during his dignified transfer.

“Our hearts are heavy as we honor our fallen brother,” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said. “As we continue to grieve this terrible loss, we will keep Edgar’s family, friends, and fellow officers in our thoughts and prayers.”

Rodman’s Neck is used by police for weapons and tactical training, an NYPD spokesperson said. Ordonez’s death did not involve gunfire, according to the spokesperson.

Authorities were investigating whether the officer may have suffered heat stroke or a heart attack.

New York City has seen temperatures above 90 degrees in the past few days, marking the second heat wave of the year . Temperatures in New York City hit the highest point all year on Monday at 95 degrees in Central Park .
