A 55-year-old climber slipped and tumbled 700 feet down the tallest mountain in Oregon, deputies said.

Chris Zwierzynski was on the Old Chute — a steep route to the summit — at about 7:45 a.m. July 6, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

The Arizona man was near the top of the mountain at an elevation of about 11,200 feet, deputies said. Mount Hood is an active volcano that’s over 11,240 feet.

He slipped on ice and tumbled down the snowy mountain, unable to stop himself until landing in the Hot Rocks area, deputies said.

Off-duty military medics saw him fall and rushed down the mountain to help him, deputies said.

Additionally, two Mount Hood National Forest rangers were in the area and were able to tend to Zwierzynski.

Zwierzynski was in critical condition because of the fall, deputies said.

It took rescuers about six hours to airlift him the mountain, deputies said.

His rescue was done quickly, “largely because mountain conditions were ideal for rescue,” deputies said.

Mount Hood is about a 70-mile drive southeast from Portland.
