NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — July is a milestone month for North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS), as they are celebrating the two-year anniversary of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

According to a news release, the state continues to expand access to mental health and crisis intervention services with a partnership with FirstLink.

The 988 Lifeline provides resources for those who are facing mental health challenges, substance use crises, emotional distress, or thoughts of suicide.

988 is available 24/7 via call, test, or chat , and offers immediate access to trained counselors who are compassionate with their support and guidance.

“In recognizing this anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment to enhancing mental health support and crisis intervention capabilities across North Dakota,” said Pamela Sagness, the director of HHS Behavioral Health Division. “The stigma surrounding mental health has seen improvement in recent years and we want North Dakotans to know help is available.”

Since 988 Lifeline started, there has been a 61% increase in interactions, and HHS Suicide Prevention Administrator Melissa Markegard considers this as a testament to the efforts of destigmatizing mental health.

To continue to help these efforts, HHS also expanded its Mental Health Program Directory online, which is a comprehensive list of services sorted by location and specialization.

“Initiatives like the 988 Lifeline and our Mental Health Program Directory are essential,” Sagness added. “These resources empower individuals to seek help proactively, fostering stronger, healthier communities statewide.”

If you are having thoughts of suicide, a mental health or substance use crisis, are experiencing emotional distress, or have concerns about someone who may need support, you are asked to call, text, or chat with 988.
