Cris Collinsworth is Considering Gifting the World with Himself via Artificial Intelligence

As jobs worldwide risk losing favor to automation and artificial intelligence, one industry titan is embracing the change and suggesting a digital duplication of himself. That titan, of course, is none other than NFL broadcaster and former NFL receiver Cris Collinsworth.

As a guest on Up & Adams this past Tuesday , Collinsworth pontificated the prospect of artificial intelligence (AI) and its use with his broadcast partner Al Michaels for this year's upcoming Olympic games.

Downright giddy at AI's potential, Collinsworth describes the process with the same clueless enthusiasm that Donald Trump describes sharks targeting battery-powered boats.

And here I'm old enough to remember when AI was a mediocre Steven Spielberg movie starring that kid from The Sixth Sense.

In what can only be described as a thrown-away script from next season's lineup of Black Mirror , Collinsworth essentially boils down AI as a get-rich-quick scheme for himself and Al Michaels, as the two will be gallivanting on a billionaire's yacht in Italy. At the same time, Al Michaels' digital "cookie" is stuck doing the dirty work for the Olympics.

As if the prospect of a digital, immortal Cris Collinsworth isn't frightening enough, it's doubly frightening for Bears fans who have listened to Sunday Night broadcasts against the Packers and Collinsworth's insufferable oral polishing of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Imagine a world with an undying Cris Collinsworth having a borderline sexual reaction to a routine 3-yard slant route thrown by an AI version of an ayahuasca-infused Aaron Rodgers.

The hubris of such a move is even more baffling when you consider that, by essentially making his voice its own entity and allowing himself to call games in perpetuity, Collinsworth is ostensibly shutting the door on any younger broadcasters who are looking to get their start in the industry. Did anyone ask for this? Does Collinsworth believe his voice belongs in the annals of broadcasting legends with the likes of Harry Caray, Bob Uecker, and Howard Cosell?

One of the more charming aspects of sports is that it is finite. Players' careers are short, and as a result, fans must genuinely live in the moment. As Andy Bernard so succinctly put it in the finale of The Office : " I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them."
