Three common kitchen items could cure your hangover after a night out

There’s nothing worse than waking up with a head-splitting hangover after a fun night out with friends .

While there’s no definitive hangover cure, Dr Rhonda Patrick said some methods to relieve the symptoms. Speaking on her podcast FoundMyFitness , she said: “There is fascinating research exploring how certain fruits might influence the metabolism of alcohol ,” she said.

There are two enzymes – alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase – that can break down alcohol and its byproducts.

Studies conducted in labs have shown that fruits like pears , sweet lime and coconut water can enhance those enzymes, therefore potentially helping to break down alcohol faster.

That could reduce hangover duration and severity, she said. While the study suggests this could be an effective hangover remedy, there’s no human evidence to back it up.

In a study in animals, star fruit, Chinese quince, yellow lemon, pear and Java apple helped to reduce ethanol, a component of alcohol. The mechanism that is thought to cause this is higher fructose, a type of sugar found in fruits, in the body. It appears to be able to speed up alcohol elimination, she said.

There have been human studies that have found consuming fructose helped to reduce the duration of intoxication by nearly 30 percent.

“These findings suggest that consuming fruit or even some fruit juice – think cranberry and vodka – while drinking alcohol could theoretically help mitigate hangover symptoms or even some of the effects of sleep by enhancing the body’s ability to process and eliminate alcohol more quickly.”
