IBERIA PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — Iberia Parish President M. Larry Richard said his council is soon going to make the decision whether or not to extend or continue a moratorium on solar companies coming into the parish.

“What the council is doing right now is coming up with parameters as far as if you have solar farms in Iberia Parish where you can have them and what’s going to be required for a company that’s going to put them here,” Richard said.

Many residents have gone to social media to show their concerns about the moratorium being dropped, allowing solar companies to come in and create farms in the parish. While environmental and economic issues are the main focus, Eric McVicker with Conservatives for a Clean Energy Future said there should be nothing to worry about.

“Whenever you have something new come to the community there are obviously very understandable and reasonable concerns,” McVicker said. “With solar, the evidence shows that a lot of the concerns that are being spread about it just are not going to come to fruition.”

Richard said he has not talked to any landowner or company to develop a solar farm in the parish. He has faith in his council to make the correct decision for the people.

“We want business. We’re totally open for business in Iberia Parish,” Richard said. “If you can take a look at what’s going on. We want to know what type of business we bring in here. We want smart growth. We want smart. We want to know what it is that we’re doing. I think what the parish council is doing right now, in my opinion, is a great thing.”
