FHP: Man dies after jumping off Blackwater River bridge on I-10

A man died after jumping off a Blackwater River bridge on Interstate 10 on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident was reported around 2:15 p.m. near mile marker 27 of I-10 in Santa Rosa County.

According to a FHP news release, the driver of a SUV appeared to intentionally strike the concrete barrier wall of the bridge. After hitting the wall, the driver jumped off the bridge and into the water.

Personnel from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office conducted a search for the driver.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the FHP reported, "The body of a male subject has just been located and recovered. This is still early stages of the investigation."

At this time, no information has been released on the identity of the individual or the circumstances that prompted his leap from the bridge.

This is the second time in less than a month that an individual has sustained fatal injuries after jumping off a local bridge.

On June 24, three suspects in a drive-by shooting in Escambia led law enforcement officers on a high speed chase before bailing out of their vehicle and jumping off a bridge over the Escambia River on U.S. Highway 90. One man, 22-year-old Trevion Moton, died as a result of the fall. Another man, Jaquaris Ethridge, 19, was arrested after his jump in connection to the deaths of both the drive-by shooting victim and Moton.

The third suspect, 19-year-old Terrance Gross, survived the jump and initially eluded capture, but was ultimately arrested a few days later Laredo, Texas, as he was allegedly heading to Mexico.
