Bob Odenkirk opened up about why he thinks Steve Carell got the star role of Michael Scott in the now-iconic show "The Office."

Odenkirk spoke about his audition for the role of Michael Scott on Wednesday’s episode of the "Office Ladies" podcast hosted by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey.

"I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy," said Odenkirk. "It's one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know, is the one who got the role," he continued. Fischer also recalled later in the episode that she remembered preparing for the audition alongside Odenkirk.

"You know, you just don't believe me as a purely light character. You don't. You just are looking for the darkness," said Odenkirk, who played Saul Goodman, the main character in the hit series "Better Caul Saul," a dark comedy and drama.

Later in the episode, Odenkirk showed love for "The Office" and creator Greg Daniels.

"I think The Office was exactly what it needed to be," said Odenkirk. "What you guys did, and Steve did, was exactly what it needed to be. And it was great," said Odenkirk, adding, "I had a great time auditioning. And I love Greg Daniels."

Earlier this year, it was announced "The Office" would be getting a spinoff series. Daniels, who adapted "The Office," originally a BBC series, for U.S. audiences in 2005, will team up with "Nathan for You" co-creator Michael Koman for the project, described in a press release as "a new mockumentary series set in the same universe" as its beloved predecessor.
