Extreme heat will continue in parts of San Diego County this week as an upper ridge over southeast California shifts east, leading to the hottest inland temperatures through Thursday, with a slow decrease late in the week and into the weekend.

An excessive heat warning remained in effect for desert areas until at least 9 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Highs in San Diego County Thursday will be 76 to 81 near the coast, 83 to 86 inland, 86 to 90 in the western valleys, 97 to 102 near the foothills, 97 to 107 in the mountains and 117 to 121 in the deserts.

The southerly flow behind the upper high will begin to draw in tropical moisture Friday which will continue into Sunday, the NWS said.

Fog and low clouds will persist along the coast due to the strong inversion under the warm air mass increasing inland Friday.

Friday should be the last day of extreme heat for the deserts and a cooling trend sets in for the weekend. While temperatures will be cooler, meteorologists said it will still be hot and recommend the public not let their guard down.

Officials said “drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
